Overdone
The Cleome that made me so happy last year left seeds all over the planter.
When Spring came, I thought the seeds would have been killed by the snow, and I decided a little help would be good.
Nature does not need help. I did not know it.
So, I scattered a hand full of the tiny seeds on top of the dirt, just like that.
Now, I am scared!
In theory, these plants are supposed to grow as tall as the middle of the guard rail on the deck.
And each one is supposed to produce 3,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 seeds, until the end of Summer.
I am scared!
I am hoping that the over crowded planter will take care of itself, meaning, the smaller plants will end up dying. I am counting on nature's own selection of the fittest.
Anyway, the flowers do make me happy. They are so brave and put up with this awful heat.
We spent the early hours of the morning working in the yard today. While Gordon worked on the future patio under the private deck, I weeded. And weeded. And weeded.
I've said that if the plants, and vegetables, and crops, would grow with the same speed the weeds grow, we would be inundated with food. The world would not have a spot where people went hungry!
Talking about it, I must go and plan dinner.

those are beautiful flowers! maybe you should shake the tops when they start producing seeds and gather them up in an envelope to give to folks who want them! i'd be willing to try growing some here - especially if they tolerate heat! i could always just scatter a few near one end of the pond - or next to the barn or shed. :)
great suggestion t. i had a friend bring me seeds yesterday from her garden. i love when others share their gardens with me and i with them, it's soooo much fun!!!
these flowers are beautiful, i love the stone work!!!!
The flowers are very beautiful! That said.... our first summer here, I got a few volunteer morning glories, I was thrilled! So I saved some of the seeds and in the early spring, I threw them in the flower bed, they grew and climbed the porch rail and the hand rail and I put strings up to shade that side of the porch. The following year, they were thick as thieves and took over, I kept pulling them up and pulling them up. Now our 5th summer, we have lost the battle and will be taken over completely, if I don't resort to (gasp) some sort of chemical!
I do wish you the best of luck and hope you can manage your bounty better than I could manage mine! :-)
Why is it those weeds always grow no matter the weather. Too much sun, too much rain, too much cold, the weeds still keep coming.
What's up with that? Hmmm.....

I had the same experience with bachelor buttons. I've always loved cleome, but can't get it to grow. I love your stone stairs and planter. Very cool. Thanks for the words of warning.
Oh my! That's a lot of zero's and a LOT of SEEDS!!!!
good luck keeping that under control!

Old-fashioned Cleome comes up from seeds each year or I help it along by taking ripening pods and strip out the seeds and drop them somewhere else. They are prolific seeders and I will be surprised if they do not get as tall as you want. You might be able to help out by feeding them some of the liquid fertilizers.
What have you done??!! They'll take over the world!
They are beautiful though, so it'll be a beautiful world.
xx
They're beautiful! (And I can just imagine all the self-seeded seeds laughing diabolically as you added more seeds to the mix - "Mwah-ha-ha, we'll take over the world!"
they're gorgeous! how i wish i had SOME sun in my yard. our color is limited to coleus and impatiens.
