From the heart
I would like to make it clear that I love living in this country, specially in this neck of the woods! I cannot imagine us living in any big city ever again, and I pray that nothing will force us to do so. We, Hubby and I, see the big cities as places to visit on short vacation and to leave behind, as soon as we get tired of it. Which does not take long.
I love the people around here. They have their particularities, and differences, but I think that I have plenty of them too. We are humans and variety is what makes it all worth while.
The love for the US grew inside me, slowly and steady. There are things in this country that still take my breath away. For example, whenever there is a need for people in general to get together and help someone else, whether it is searching for a person that disappeared, or someone that lost everything in a house fire, or any other urgent need, the American people gather like bees and start working! It always amazes me.
Another detail that I have observed, throughout these years, is the love that the Americans have for their pets. It is fantastic! We always loved ours, back in Brazil. But, for the population in general, dogs were animals that lived in the backyard and had the function of keeping the creeps out of their properties. And I bet my tutu that it is still like that!
We had dogs inside the house, and they were our babies. That was because of my mom and dad, not because this was the way the Brazilians in general behaved.
We lived somewhat surrounded by foreigners, as we grew up. My dad (a foreigner himself) worked for a company that hired tons of them and it was normal for us to hear the Portuguese spoken with heavy accents. It did not call our attention anymore. And I remember that, if I ever saw a pet being treated special, it belonged to one of them - not the Brazilians!
People in America are proud of the fact that their pets are spoiled by them. They are proud of their "babies" and they spend a chunk of money just to please these pets. I love it, love it, love it!!
Life is simple where we live. Pick-up trucks are the most common vehicles around here - which I found very funny as I arrived.
Traffic is interesting. From the old retired person that drives miles and miles with the turn signal on (and does not turn!), to the constant waving of "hi" from people you don't have a clue who they are. But you do wave back, because it is fun.
The heart of America beats in the small towns, I think. That's where one falls in love with this country, because it talks to one's soul.
And I love it!

Yep, that's life in the South, in a basket! I love it too! Being a "Yankee", it took me a while about the waving, but I do it myself LOL! Being in a small town, myself, they now wave because they know me and I wave back - because the face or vehicle is familiar, not necessarily because I remember their name. It does seem funny to be called "Miss Sharon" by the store keepers - either I am memorable or infamous, I do not know which one. Again their face is familiar, but I am lost as to whom I am answering. Just getting old, I guess.
My pets have always been spoiled - even in the North, LOL!
Have a great day!
