Envy
I usually do not envy other people. I don't envy their possessions, don't envy their lives. I don't. I am more than happy with all that I have achieved in life, both past and present.
But I do envy something. Bad! Really, really bad! To the point of embarrassment.
And I am going to confess all about it.
I envy the knowledge of the English language that some individuals have.
I read some blogs and just cannot believe what many bloggers are capable of doing with their writing. I laugh, get emotional, and even (sometimes) upset, together with the authors - if that is what they intend to deliver.
The richness of vocabulary that some people have is fantastic. I understand every single word, and sentence, and have unimaginable pleasure in reading a well written post.
But I cannot write like they do. And that's what bothers me.
I can do it in Portuguese. I think. But not in English. And it pisses me off.
My mother always said that one of the best ways for us to learn new words (and worlds) was through reading. My addiction to books came from her. Reading is part of my life, and it has always been.
I've had friends and family members say that the books I enjoyed most were boring/annoying. It took me a long time to understand that I was more involved on the way the writer wrote, than on what the story told. Yes, the story has to have some content - I am not that crazy. But, I've enjoyed books that were as bland as un-spiced rice, because the writer had an exquisite way of putting the words together!
On the other hand, a so-called good writer can get too repetitive in a hurry. One reads two books from this author, and the scenes are nothing but the same "recipe", this time mixed back to front. Lack of creativity, I'd dare say.
But, back to bloggers. Yesterday, while we waited for the weather to decide what to do, I spent quite a while reading new blogs. And found a few great ones. People that, from now on, I will envy!
Take this lady, for instance. The blog is "Thoughts from a Yodeling Goatherder". Find the longest post that she has written and read it. Isn't it delightful? There is a certain speed to her writing, like she is actually talking non stop, in a very interesting manner, and warm voice. And funny? She is funny! When she wants to, right?
Maybe it all looks that special to me, because I am a foreigner. You guys are familiar with the expressions and terms that are used in all these interesting blogs, while I get more than a kick out of them. I feel they fit so well and they are super appropriate.
I will follow a blog if the writer has tastes, thoughts and/or feelings similar to mine. I will identify myself in their posts, I will have fun, I will be supportive. I will feel with them. For them.
I will not tell all the reasons why I would NOT follow a blog. Sufice to say that, if they have differences which will make me hurt, I will not go there. (First time I used the word "sufice"... LOL...)
Now, I will follow a blog to learn!
Like my mom said, reading is the best way. Perhaps I can catch something.
I am not that old.

you, my dear miriam, have nothing to envy. you put your thoughts into words very well. i've always enjoyed your stories, and only occasionally find a reminder that you are not "American" by birth.
i do love thoughts from a yodeling goatherder. she does have a funny, easy, story-telling way about her. :)
Miriam, I could never tell that English was your second language also I love and look forward to reading your posts.
Don't you change a thing about your writing, Miriam. Everyone has their own style -- and yours is just fine.
Yodeling is very funny and does have a way of telling a good story. :)
omg, don't be envious! your stories and style of writing is wonderful! I am envious of you mastering a second language! i took four years of german in h.s. (too many years ago to mention) but without anyone to practice with, that knowledge is long done! plus, how was i expected to learn to spell in german when i never really grasped spelling in english?
;o)
English is my first language and I envy those same people. I love writing so I've always wished I could express myself as well as they do.
For the record - your writing is great!!!! I never would have guessed that English was your second language, very nice!
You are funny! I love your writing style, you have a brilliant way with words which is only further enhanced by your 'foreigner' background. Your writing is honest, quirky and fun.
As the Billy Joel song goes, (and I'll now be singing this all day!)
"Don't go changing, to try and please me
You never let me down before....."
I'll have to check out the Yodeling Goatherder. If she's good enough for you then she's good enough for me.
xx
Oh, Miriam, no reason to envy anyone, I think you are a great writer and your posts are always interesting! You have your own style, don't go messing with it!
I have no style, I just tend to blurt it out, except for maybe when I try my hand at poetry, I will give that about 5 minutes of thought.
If you hadn't had the info on your posts, I would never have taken you for being other than English speaking. You have managed to get a little of the Southern drawl in you speech, just as I have - and I was born a Yankee!
Did you have those nasty storms last night? We just got our power back on about an hour ago. Sure hope you are safe!
I'm with everyone else--While I may not comment every time, I enjoy your blog and your way with words!
I have to be honest and say that the way some people wrote USED to bother me, then I became president of the Golden Retriever rescue, and we had people submitting their stories about their dogs for our newsletter--I learned to appreciate and enjoy others style of writing and really enjoy it!! ~DON'T change a thing!!!~ :-)))
You are selling yourself short! I loved your posts about traveling with your husband and your journey to obtaining the elusive green card! Both were well written stories that had my complete intrest. I felt your frustration and your love for your husband. I think you are an excellent writer and I always look forward to your posts.
I'm with everyone else - I love the natural, down-to-earth, honest voice you write with. You are real and filled with love and that's the kind of writing I want to read. So please, keep on doing what you do!
Hi Miriam,
Thanks for popping by my bog, you don't know who the handsome young man is IN THE WET SHIRT, well he is Colin Firth......
Pride and Prejudice
Bridget Jones' Diary
The King's Speech
What more need I say?!
Yum yum.

I always enjoy your writing and your blog too. Since Swedish is my first language, I do understand your feelings. But one thing is for sure: The more you write, the better you get. And I think blogging is wonderful for this purpose.--Inger
I think you write really well - thoughtful, contemplative...
I, on the other hand, usually use few words because i'm always in a rush.
i like what you write
I think the key to good writing is heart. And you have plenty of that!
